Still have questions about The Generator Project? Below are some of the common questions we’ve been asked. Click on the question and see what we have to say.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE GENERATOR PROJECT
The Generator Project is a movement that was inspired by the face to face connections and conversations that resulted from the summer blackout of 2003 on the Eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States. With all the pressures and distractions that keep us preoccupied each day in our lives powered off or disconnected, we connected. Face to Face. It is the importance of those face to face connections that the Generator Project is all about.
HOW CAN PEOPLE PARTICIPATE AND SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT?
We want people to register their intention to power down from the hustle and bustle of life and the distractions that we face during the next Generator Weekend. We want you to make us the excuse to send out the invite that you have been meaning to send out and get connected with friends, family and neighbours face to face. You can register your Generator Project here for your chance to win prizes and to become part of the global movement to make the world a happier and healthier place by getting people connected face to face.
WHEN IS THE NEXT GENERATOR WEEKEND?
The next Generator Weekend is on the weekend of May 4th, 5th and 6th.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO CONNECTING FACE TO FACE AND BUILDING SOCIAL CONNECTIONS?
There are a ton of great benefits from getting connected face to face.
- Increased mental and physical well-being
- Lower levels of anxiety and depression
- Increased happiness
- Higher self-esteem
- Greater empathy for others
- Helps you recover from disease
- A 50% increase in your chances of living longer
In general, most research states that by staying connected you will be happier, have fewer health problems and live longer. Interestingly, if you don’t have social connections, many of these positives work in the opposite direction resulting in some of the following:
- Increased loneliness
- Increased anxiety
- Increased states of depression
- Increased later in life cognitive decline
- Vulnerability to disease and death
- Increased mortality
In general, increased isolation increases the risk of premature death from all causes by 50% and has an effect on your mortality risk roughly comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and greater than obesity and physical inactivity. That is why we want to get you connected on the next Generator Weekend.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR TIME THAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO RUN A GENERATOR PROJECT ON THE WEEKEND?
Anytime between Friday and Sunday, on our Generator Weekends, is when we want you to host your Generator Project. By getting everyone to do it over the same weekend we hope to build a momentum and energy that will inspire everyone to get involved. We start on Friday hoping to inspire businesses to support their employees health by hosting Generator Projects in the workplace. At the end of the workday and through the rest of the weekend we hope to inspire people to take action in their own lives, in their own homes and on their own streets by connecting with family, friends or neighbours. As for the length of time for your Generator Project, it is up to you! Do what you think works for your gathering and the type of Generator Project that you wish to host. Don’t forget, this should be fun and should put a smile on your face!
WHO CAN BE A GENERATOR?
Everyone can be a Generator! By planning and registering your intention to host your own Generator Project and get people together face to face you are a Generator! You can register your Generator Project here, and by doing so you get entered into win prizes and become part of a global movement to make the world a happier and healthier place. We appreciate your leadership in getting your friends, family or community together and are excited to hear about your story after the event. Don’t forget, the size of your gathering isn’t the important part. It’s about getting connected and enjoying the people that you invite to spend time with.
WHAT IS A GENERATOR PROJECT?
A Generator Project is any gathering inspired by the Generator Project message and that is registered here which is hosted over a Generator Weekend. It can be as small as you and a friend or neighbour having coffee, to a family or extended family BBQ, a street long pot luck or pancake breakfast or maybe a ball hockey or basketball game. We aren’t particular about what you do, we just want you to make us the excuse to reach out and get connected face to face for Generator Weekend and assist in supporting healthy connection habits moving forward!
HOW BIG DOES IT NEED TO BE?
There is no commitment to size. It is whatever works for you. It might be you and your neighbour for a coffee, the extended family for a BBQ, it might be the kids on the street for a basketball game or it might be a street long pot luck. Whatever you want to do in order to create some face to face connections that will drive some incredibly healthy results.
IS THERE A COST?
Absolutely not. The investment that people are going to make is in themselves and the community around them. Does it get any better than that? No cost and you and your community reap all the rewards!
WHAT IF PEOPLE ARE ALREADY WELL CONNECTED?
This movement Is about everyone. If things are going well in your life right now, including your social connection, maybe for this upcoming Generator Project you could think about who might benefit from your outreach. Giving the gift of connection will feel great and you could make someone elses day or life just a little bit better. If you are someone that gathers your friends and neighbours or even hosts your own street party, that is awesome, we welcome you as experienced Generators. You can really help lead the social connection of a family, a group of friends, a street or community. Join us for the Generator Weekend by doing your thing and don’t forget about including those that can use a little extra support in getting connected. Seniors, people with disabilities and even those workaholics that might need a little reminder! 😊We know you will feel great in doing it as well!
WHAT ABOUT SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T NATURALLY CONNECT WITH OTHERS?
For those who struggle with the idea of getting connected, please use the Generator Project as your excuse to reach out even if it’s for the first time or the first time in a long time. It’s never too late to get started. Check out the tools on our website that make the invite easy. Maybe as a starting point you could reach out to someone you know who could use some support in their life? Remember, this is not a competition and the goal should be quality over quantity. Start by reaching out to those you feel most connected to and then broaden your gatherings as you see fit moving forward! Most importantly, have some fun!
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE? WHAT DO I DO TO CREATE A GENERATOR PROJECT?
Honestly, it can be anything that feels good to you. It could be as small as you inviting a neighbour or a friend over to your house for a coffee or tea, or it could be as big as a street party. It could be about gathering the kids on the street to play a sport, some arts and crafts or maybe a board game competition. We have lots of suggestions which you can check out, but don’t make it complicated. If cooking seems too big of a task, order out or just do drinks, if money is an issue do a BYOD (bring your own drinks). The power is in the connection, not in what you serve or do to get people there.
WHAT IF I AM NERVOUS TO INVITE PEOPLE I DON’T SPEAK TO REGULARLY?
Know this. May people feel the same way. Whether it is people that you know well or people that you don’t know well, it’s always a challenge to put yourself out there and invite people. Check out our website to find the tools to make it easier and use The Generator Project as your excuse to make the outreach. That way the focus remains on the good that you are focused on doing and everyone wants to make a difference. If people can’t make it, it’s just that they aren’t able to make it, we’ll get them next time. The funny thing is that we have all been on the receiving end and know what our usual response is to receiving an invite… Wow, I would love to get together and thank goodness that someone sent out the note. We all have that need to be connected and when people finally send out the note it just gets that energy building.
WHAT IF I LIVE IN A CONDO?
There is some research out there which suggests that connecting in condominiums or apartment buildings is tougher than in other low rise dwellings. The taller the building the more disconnected the community. One suggestion we like is hosting an event for the people on your floor? A wine and cheese, beer and burgers, a hallway dinner or a good old coffee talk.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT GENERATOR PROJECT?
You can register your intention to get connected with family, friends or neighbours here. There is no cost to do so and you can also make full use of the tools we have provided and find out more about the campaign and the benefits of social connection.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE INFORMATION THAT I PROVIDE YOU?
Our goal with the information provided by any Generator is to grow the campaign around the world by spreading the momentum of the campaign to partners, new countries, new Generators and people passionate about coming together with their family, friends or community. We do not share or sell your information to any related parties or third party resellers. We just want to help spread this important message with you.
HOW OFTEN ARE YOU PLANNING ON SCHEDULING A GENERATOR PROJECT?
Due to the success of the initiative, we intend to host Generator Weekends each spring and fall to remind people to stay connected. We hope that by hosting these regular occasions that people will make us the excuse to send out the invite that they have been meaning to send out and create healthy ongoing connections habits. We’ll keep coming back each spring and fall just to make sure you haven’t got distracted, a little too busy or overwhelmed by the challenges of life and found yourself not staying connected with the people you need in your life.
